First Task Force Meeting Report
|
The IAU Task Force on Access to Higher Education met,
for the first time, at the University of Porto, Portugal, home
institution of the Chairperson, Prof. Jose Ferreira Gomes. The
agenda of the two-day meeting is included in the Report as are the
preliminary questions Task Force Members were asked to address prior to
coming together.
Anchoring all discussions about access to higher education in a clear
understanding and appreciation of the institutional and national
context was, not surprisingly, the first strong recommendation of the
Task Force Members, given the diversity of their own institutional
‘home’. As well, they agreed on the need to broaden the topic to
cover both quantitative but also qualitative considerations when
dealing with topics such as access, success, retention, equity and the
whole spectrum of issues facing different systems of higher
education. In addition to funding as an obstacle or a lever for
access, other areas such as technology, student support, curricular
issues, program flexibility and many others, were identified as key
dimensions of this ‘problematique’.
IAU was tasked to gather additional information to draw a better
‘snapshot’ of issues as the next step in this initiative.
