The General Conference, is the Supreme
Decision-Making body of the IAU. During the Business Sessions, which form an
integral part of the General Conference, and which are open to all
participants, IAU Members in good standing take stock of the
Association’s achievements (see: IAU Report of activities 2004-2008),
set or adjust the strategy for the future (see: IAU Programme
2008-2012), review and discuss key statutory documents that are
submitted for approval. During these Sessions, the Election
process is explained and voting takes place for the IAU President and
members of the Administrative Board.
It is also the exclusive right of the General Conference to adopt any
Policy Statements or issue Declarations of Principle of the
Association. These then serve as advocacy platforms for the IAU
and often structure new projects and initiatives. At the 13th
General Conference, a draft Policy Statement entitled Equitable Access,
Success and Quality in Higher Education will be submitted for review
and approval.
