The City of Utrecht is
located in the heart of the Netherlands and originated from a Roman
settlement founded in 48 AD. In the Middle Ages it developed into a
Dutch city that ranked first in size and importance up until the 15th
century. The old inner-city, with its canals, wharves and cellars, once
a mile long harbour system, ancient churches and houses, and the
magnificent Dom tower in the middle of all, gives the city a
distinctive character.
Utrecht is now part of the Randstad Megapolis (Amsterdam, Rotterdam,
The Hague and Utrecht), one of Europe’s top-10 regions concerning
economic and cultural live. Utrecht itself counts about 300.000
inhabitants, but is the centre of an area of smaller cities and green
landscapes. The international aspect of the Utrecht economy is
reflected by the fact that 15% of all foreign companies in the
Netherlands are based in Utrecht.
Utrecht has a rich cultural live and is one of the most dynamic
economic regions in the country. Its atmosphere is strongly influenced
by the university and other institutions of Higher Education with in
total over 60.000 students. Utrecht stands out from a qualitative point
of view, with a young and highly qualified professional population and
a highly developed knowledge and service economy.
The rich cultural live starts with the city itself, with it’s Mediaeval
character and with the presence of the university, several
arts-colleges and other institutions of higher education and with rich
traditions of festivals of old music, theatre and community arts. But,
the city has also a strong track record in the field of creative
industry, gaming and design.
Utrecht is a city with ambitions, economically, but also as a cultural
centre. Its aim is to become Cultural Capital of Europe in 2018 and
before that the city and region will celebrate on an internationally
level, the Peace Treaty of Utrecht of 1713.
