IAU Elections

During each General Conference, IAU Members elect a new President and the Administrative Board

Participation in IAU elections either as a candidate or to vote is reserved to IAU Members in good standing (with fully paid up membership fees).

Calls for nominations were sent by IAU Secretary-General in April 2008 to all Members.  The deadline for receipt of candidacies and nominations is May 30, 2008. They must be submitted in writing, using the appropriate Nominations Forms

Candidates must be present at the General Conference to be elected.

A list of all candidates will be available on site at the Conference.  A brief Curriculum Vitae for each candidate will be made available for review as well.

The eligibility rules for candidates for the IAU Presidency (nomination form) are:
  • Nominations for election to the office of President shall be signed by 5 duly accredited representatives of Members of the Association, who shall have secured the consent of the nominee and who shall not nominate more than one candidate
  • The IAU President, elected for a term of four years by the General Conference, must be a serving or a former Executive Head of an IAU member institution in good standing, who has served as a Member or Deputy Member of the Administrative Board
  • The outgoing President is not eligible for re-election
  • The President chairs the IAU Administrative Board.
The eligibility rules for candidates for election as members of the Administrative Board (nomination form) are:
  • All nominations and candidacies for election to the Administrative Board shall be endorsed by 5 duly accredited representatives of Members of the Association, who shall have secured the consent of the person nominated
  • Only serving Executive Heads of members in good standing of the Association and actually present at the General Conference are eligible for election as Administrative Board or Deputy Board members .  Exceptionally a candidate who holds a position other than the Executive Head or who is no longer serving as Executive Head in a member institution may be considered, provided the candidacy is accompanied by a written endorsement of the serving Executive Head
  • Administrative Board members are elected for a 4-year term once renewable.
Exceptions to these rules may only be considered by the Elections Committee in order to assure geographic and/or gender balance on the Administrative Board.

For more detailed information about the IAU election procedure please read the Rules of Procedure for Elections.

An Elections Committee, chaired by the President of IAU and composed of not less than five representatives of IAU Members will facilitate the election process during the General Conference in Utrecht.
