IAU ActivitiesFederico Mayor Zaragoza, former UNESCO Director General, will be the keynote speaker at the IAU 2009 International Conference, focusing on The Role of Higher Education in Fostering Inter-Cultural Dialogue and Understanding. The Conference will be hosted by Notre-Dame University, Louaize, in Lebanon on November 5 and 6, 2009. Registration is now open. Just released: Higher Education Policy (HEP), 22/2 June 2009 The latest edition of HEP features an article proposing a Magna Charta for Academic Freedom in Europe, by Terenc Karran; William Locke looks at building relations between Research, Policy and Practice in HE; the finances of international students in Australia are also examined, revealing how numerous students experience financial difficulties; finance policy in China and how it affects equity in access to HE; university design is looked at, and, it is argued, that university space can influence the nature of the community; trade liberalization of HE within the GATS framework is examined; the final paper looks at how restructuring in the staffing of Nigerian universities could be a solution for the sustainable development of the country's institutions. World Civic Forum, Seoul, Korea, May 5-8 IAU chaired the session on the Role of University Engagement for Civic Enhancement and presented the ongoing IAU project on the necessary linkages between higher education/research and EFA and related MDGs. Entitled How Should, Could, Higher Education Be Better Involved in Education-Related MDGs?, the presentation is available on IAU website. A Roundtable on the Future of Universities was one of the major events of the Forum. It included a discussion between university presidents and representatives of international governmental organizations on the global crisis and university responses and another on the university vision, philosophy, and global responsibility and practices for the future. http://www.wcf2009.org ISSC World Social Science Forum: One Planet – Worlds Apart – Bergen, Norway, May 10-12 IAU participated in the 1st World Social Science Forum organized by the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The main purpose was to demonstrate the global presence, impact and authority of the social sciences. It brought together researchers and stakeholders in international social science who addressed topics of world significance and future priorities for international social science. Amartya Sen set the tone by addressing the audience by identifying key Challenges for the Social Sciences in the New Century. All papers are posted on the Conference website. In response to the many requests for information received lately, a collaborative partnership of organizations and institutions has developed a website to provide up to the minute information relevant to the H1N1 virus outbreak in North America and its implications for international higher education. The website contains news, statistics and travel advisories about the H1N1 outbreak, and information about institutional responses. The meeting aimed at setting up the official platform for higher education policy issues between ASEAN+3 countries in order to enhance academic collaboration and student mobility in the region. The objective of the Programme is to help build the European Research Area. This report assesses progress in implementing FP7 and what remains to be done to fully reach its original objectives. There will be a fourfold increase in the 2009-2013 budget. It focused on the research climate and attractiveness of the European Research Area (ERA) and tried to identify ways to create a better environment for researchers in Europe, foster young talent for research and their engagement in ERA, and develop research skills and an entrepreneurial mindset among young researchers. http://www.eramobility.cz/ European University Association (EUA): Masters’ Degrees EUA has published a Survey of Master’s Degrees in Europe. The study shows that the Master’s degree will play a crucial role as vertical mobility increases. The study stresses that the provision of Masters’ degrees needs to be more flexible if it is to meet labour market needs. http://www.eua.be/index.php?id=1075 Eurydice: Data on the European Higher Education Area Eurydice has published Higher Education in Europe 2009: Developments in the Bologna Process. This report aims to assess the impact of developments in the Bologna decade and identify the main challenges for the European Higher Education Area in the future. http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/Eurydice/showPresentation?pubid=099EN Spain/Portugal: Iberian Area of Research Spanish and Portuguese rectors met in Coimbra in April. They discussed the creation of an Iberian Area of Research and the promotion of new forms of collaboration between the two countries, as well as the creation of Iberian doctorates.
