experiences, the Learning Centre of SEAMO and the Open University of
Jakarta have organised an international Seminar “Acceleration of
Educational Quality and Quantity through the Provision of Open and
Distance Learning Programmes in Southeast Asian (SEA) Countries”.

During a month-long campaign, entitled Teachers Unite for EFA, teachers
will be encouraged to engage to dialogue, share experiences and to
raise overall awareness on the direct role and impact of teachers on
implementing programmes to achieve EFA goals. This event will culminate
with International Teachers’ Day, celebrated on October 5th.

This high-level UN Summit on MDGs will seek to mobilise world leaders
and all key stakeholders from civil society and the private sector to
agree on practical steps needed to achieve the MDGs, setting the tone
for the upcoming Doha Financing Development Conference.

8 September 2008 International Literacy Day
Various events are organised to draw attention to worldwide literacy
needs, with more than 780 million of the world’s adults (two-thirds of
whom are women) who do not know how to read or write. Five out-standing
regional local, regional, or national literacy programs will be awarded
the UNESCO-IRA Literacy Prize.
Education research in
generating knowledge for EFA: Global Monitoring Report 2009
IAU has recently completed a paper, commissioned by the Global
Monitoring Report (GMR), reviewing the role of research in generating
knowledge for EFA. This paper, written by N.V. Varghese, Head of Higher
Education Programmes, International Institute for Educational Planning
(IIEP), will be made available online mid-Sept on the GMR website. A
survey was developed and carried out by IAU to collect quantitative and
qualitative data. Data results are already available on the IAU website.
The next GMR 2009 publication will be presented and made public in its
entirety at the 8th Meeting of the EFA High Level Group, 16-18 December
2008.
