Today
higher education institutions are facing tremendous challenges because
of the
requirements of an emerging knowledge-based society, which lead to
changes in
education and training needs: continuing education and lifelong
learning (LLL)
are growing more and more important.
There are several
definitions of lifelong learning, the European Commission’s
being
considered the most comprehensive: “All learning activity undertaken
throughout
life, with the aim of improving knowledge, skills and competence within
a
personal, civil, social and/or employment-related perspective.”
