ETNICA – a multidisciplinary center for ethnic studies

The center conducts research in the areas of multicultural education, intercultural understanding, and cultural diversity.  It also explores the relations between immigrants, minorities and the majority population and ethical and ecological questions in the context of multiculturalism.

International Academy for Intercultural Research

The Academy serves as a forum for exchanging ideas, theories, research and know-how for senior intercultural researchers, academics, and trainers. The Academy fosters high-level interdisciplinary research and scholarship on intercultural issues by organizing conferences, publishing a newsletter and maintaining a website with papers and other resources.

Center for International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) - a multi-disciplinary research group

The center addresses in depth issues of identity, plurality and multiculturalism in the urban environment; and of accommodating diversity in society in general.  The center also researches gender issues in cultural diversity; as well as citizenship, mobility and migration.  A newsletter and a magazine in English or Norwegian are published regularly and available online.
 
Center for Research in International Migration and Ethnic Relations (CEIFO) – an interdisciplinary research unit

The general subject of work in the center is international migration, with a focus on interethnic relations. Among the research priorities are multiculturalism and diversity management, integration and incorporation into the welfare state as well as racism and discrimination.

A cross-disciplinary forum for cultural issues (among others), the center’s work relates to issues of ethnic relationships and processes in multicultural societies, as well as the effects of international migration within cultures.  The activities of the center focus on research, postgraduate education, documentation, and public information.  Organizers of the international conference on Diversity and Higher Education in August, 2006 (see “Conferences”)

Center for Research on Ethnic Relations and Nationalism (CEREN)

The central research themes for CEREN are racism, xenophobia and ethnic relations, concerning both immigrants and native groups.  The center does research and interacts directly with the academic life in the university by organizing postgraduate courses and seminars addressing these subjects.

The Center seeks to encourage comparative multi-disciplinary research on the topics of migration, multiculturalism, ethnic exclusionism and ethnic conflict, racism and nationalism.  Apart from research, the center also provides expert analysis and information on key issues, as well as instruction and training; it organizes seminars, publishes extensively and serves as a host institute for researchers.

This project is initiated in the Department of Secondary Education to address the practical issues of improving the learning environment especially for international students in an academic community that is being increasingly globalized. Some outcomes of the project were the setting up of an Orientation Committee, establishing a mentor system, creating a virtual furniture ban and various other activities.

The Cairo Community Interpreters Program – a community outreach initiative of the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Program (http://www.aucegypt.edu/fmrs/) at the American University of Cairo, Egypt. http://www.aucegypt.edu/academic/interpreters/index.html
The program trains students to serve as interpreters for asylum-seekers.  Learning to translate not only languages but also cultures, students engage in overcoming the “linguistic barriers, which are the result of cultural barriers”.

L'Association des Etudiants internationaux Autour du Monde de l’Université de Nantes a pour objectif de faciliter l'accueil et l'intégration des étudiants étrangers dans l'environnement nantais par la mise en relation avec des étudiants Français et l'organisation d'activités interculturelles. Elle propose plusieurs activités amusantes : club de conversation, visite de la ville, soirées à thèmes aux restaurants universitaires, Festival du film étranger, etc.

La Faculté d’Éducation de l’Université d’Alberta au Canada a lancé en 1988 le projet départemental Fostering Intercultural Dialogue qui examine les différentes questions que soulève l’accueil d’étudiants internationaux au sein des universités canadiennes. Comment l’université peut-elle aider les étudiants étrangers à s’adapter au système d’éducation canadien représente un exemple de problème pouvant être abordé. Tous les étudiants de l’Université sont invités à enrichir les discussions, à participer aux présentations et autres activités organisées dans le cadre de ce projet.

Organisation internationale à but non-lucratif, anciennement « American Field Service » (AFS) propose de favoriser l'apprentissage des relations interculturelles. Formée d’un réseau de 50 pays, elle offre entre autres des programmes d'échanges étudiants (d'une année, d'un semestre ou d'été).
