ETNICA – a

International Academy for

The Academy serves as a forum for exchanging ideas, theories, research
and know-how for senior intercultural researchers, academics, and
trainers. The Academy fosters high-level interdisciplinary research and

Center for International
Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) - a multi-disciplinary research
group

The center addresses in depth issues of identity, plurality and
multiculturalism in the urban environment; and of accommodating
diversity in society in general. The center also researches
gender issues in cultural diversity; as well as citizenship, mobility
and migration. A newsletter and a magazine in English or

Center for Research in
International Migration and Ethnic Relations (CEIFO) – an
interdisciplinary research unit

The general subject of work in the center is international migration,
with a focus on interethnic relations. Among the research priorities
are multiculturalism and diversity management, integration and

The central research themes for CEREN are racism, xenophobia and ethnic

center does research and interacts directly with the academic life in

Intercultural Dialogue Project – University
of Alberta, Canada.

This project is initiated in the Department of Secondary Education to
address the practical issues of improving the learning environment
especially for international students in an academic community that is
being increasingly globalized. Some outcomes of the project were the
setting up of an Orientation Committee, establishing a mentor system,
creating a virtual furniture ban and various other activities.
The Cairo Community
Interpreters Program – a community outreach initiative of the
Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Program (http://www.aucegypt.edu/fmrs/)
at the American University of Cairo, Egypt.

The program trains students to serve as interpreters
for
asylum-seekers. Learning to translate not only languages but also
cultures, students engage in overcoming the “linguistic barriers, which
are the result of cultural barriers”.

Autour du Monde of the Université de Nantes aims to
facilitate the integration of the foreign students within and around
Nantes by encouraging contact with French students and organizing
intercultural activities. It proposes activities such as conversation
clubs, city visits, dinners at university restaurants, foreign film
festivals, etc.

Université Catholique de Lille organizes several activities for
its foreign students to exchange and create networks between one
another and with its French students. Examples of activities:

AIESEC (Association
Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales)
is an international organization present in more than 800 universities
throughout the world and made up of students devoted to the promotion
of international understanding and co-operation. Through the programs
international training courses, the students can acquire valuable work
experience at foreign companies, allowing them to increase their level
of cultural awareness, social responsibility and entrepreneurship.

In 1988, the faculty of Education of the University of Alberta in
Canada launched a departemental project, Fostering Intercultural Dialogue,
which examines various questions related to the integration of foreign
students within Canadian universities such as : « how can a
university help its foreign students adapt to the Canadian education
system ?» All university’s students are invited to enrich the
discussions, to take part in the presentations and other activities
organized by this project.
