The UNESCO Chair in Problem Based Learning in Engineering Education at Aalborg University organises the first Research Symposium on Problem and Project Based Learning in Engineering and Science Education: June 30 - July 1, 2008 at Aalborg University.
The objectives of this first research symposium are:
- to create a community of researchers within PBL and engineering
- to present research projects - whether in an early stage or finalized projects on the effects of PBL in engineering educations
- to initiate new research projects
- to exchange experiences on PBL

European University Association (EUA)
EUA announced its Autumn Conference on “Inclusive and responsive universities – ensuring Europe’s competitiveness”, to be held October 23-25, 2008. The meeting will aim at discussing and promoting the concept of ‘inclusive and responsive university’, in other words an institution able to adapt to changing environment and cope with the challenges it has to face - demographic change and global competition - while carrying out its mission as a university, in terms of responding to the specific local/regional needs and developing new modes of knowledge production and transmission. Magna Charta Observatory
The Magna Charta Observatory announced that the 20th Anniversary of the Magna Charta Bologna would be celebrated at a Conference to be held in Bologna September 18-20, 2008. This occasion will also be used to take stock of successes obtained and challenges to be addressed as well as to reaffirm the aims of the Observatory and the relevance of the Magna Charta for the future.

On May 7-8 2008, The Turku School of Economics will be hosting the seminar “Dialogues on sustainable paths for the future: ethics, welfare and responsibility” jointly organised by the national ESD-resource centre and the UniPID-network. The meeting will gather academics, students, public officers, NGOs and industrialists to discuss topics such as global ethics, the promotion of global sustainability, and the compatibility between sustainable development and the liberal model.

Pontifical Gregorian University
The Pontifical Gregorian University will be hosting an International Conference on the Theories of Evolution on March 3-7, 2009 to coincide with the bi-centennial anniversary from the birth of Charles Darwin and the sesquicentennial anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species. Motivated by the awareness that recent discoveries have had a deep impact on the scope of traditional evolution theories, the conference will successively address known facts, scientific theories that try to explain evolutionary mechanisms, humanisation, philosophical questions and finally theological issues about Evolution.

Pontifical Gregorian University
The Pontifical Gregorian University will be hosting the first International Convention of the International Society for the Study of Biblical and Semitic Rhetoric on September 15-19, 2008. The meeting is designed as a networking opportunity for those who practice Biblical-Semitic rhetorical analysis (which must be differentiated from the application of classical Greek-Latin Rhetoric to the biblical texts), but it is however open to all those interested in this way of approaching the biblical text (and other Semitic texts, especially the Koran), for which the phenomena of composition constitute the entrance point to their meaning. A number of scholars’ interventions are scheduled on topics that are not necessary limited to the strict application of rhetorical analysis. The department of Civil Engineering of Shiraz University announced the Eight International Congress on Civil Engineering (8icce) to be held in Shiraz, Iran, on May 11, 12 and 13, 2009. The Meeting will focus on two core themes: “New Developments and Trends in Civil Engineering” and “Civil Engineering Education and Ethics”. The Department of English and Linguistics, University of Sistan and Baluchestan, Iran and the Department of Linguistics and Philology, Uppsala University, Sweden are jointly organising the 1st International Conference on Languages and Dialects in Iran, to be held October 28-31, 2008. The Kulliyyah of Science (KoS) of IIUM is organizing the 2nd International Conference on Advancement in Science and Technology (iCAST) 2008 on 13th - 15th June 2008. Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de Mexico
The Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de Mexico launched a call for applications for the International Meeting “Estudios sociales sobre el Fútbol”, to be held at the Universidad Cristóbal Colón in México 27-29 de May 2008. The meeting will aim on the one hand at offering a forum for researchers, academics and alumni in order to promote academic discussion on the subject and, on the other hand, at composing a research team for the "Identidades, Prácticas and Representations de los Aficionados al Futbol en México: Un Análisis multiregional" initiative, which will investigate football fans from different cities in México from the point of view of social anthropology and communication sciences, to better understand the construction of local-regional identities according to the attachment to the different teams. Participants are invited to join the project with research already completed or to bring in investigations proposals.

The Istanbul Technical University will be hosting the 11th International Conference on Durability of Building Materials and Components (11 DBMC), 11-14 May 2008, at Istanbul, a confluence of people with technological and scientific perspectives is envisaged to exchange ideas and research findings on studies pertaining to the service life and durability of construction and building materials, components and systems at the global and local levels.  The perpetual interaction of activities carried out by researchers and professionals at these two levels constitute the sub-theme of this conference – “Globality and Locality in Durability”. Global is concerned with overall or conceptual issues while local focuses on more regional or specific problems. The intention of the conference is to merge both of these efforts on durability.Abstract review process is finalized.

The Pontifical Gregorian University released a publication called “Universitas Nostra Gregoriana: La Pontificia Università Gregoriana ieri ed oggi” made up of collected articles, which originate from recent conferences or from articles already published in the various journals of the university and record the circumstances of the birth of the university and the first centuries of its existence; they show how the teachings of Vatican II are consonant with the works of the university's professors of theology of the time, many of whom were consultors at the council; and they point to the main orientations that the university expects to follow in the years to come.

Higher Education South Africa (HESA)
HESA issued a new Publication called “Higher Education Impact - universities in the South African economy” as part of its efforts to promote the value of South African education. Meant to determine the contribution of the public higher education sector to the national economy, the study reviews the literature dealing with this topic around the world, it explores income/expenditure as well as employment and remuneration patterns at local public Higher Education Institutions, and issues recommendations regarding public spending.

African Association of Universities (AAU)
AAU launched a new programme called "Mobilizing Regional Capacity Initiatives"(MRCI), that will aim at building regional capacity to support African higher education institutions in promoting sustainable development, eradicating poverty and achieving the Millennium Development Goals on the continent. At the centre of the MRCI is a Challenge Fund for strengthening partnerships between the AAU and regional and national bodies representing higher education institutions in Africa. The particular role of the AAU is to mobilize resources and help enhance the capacities of its members and regional partners, which in turn will support the contribution of their constituents and networks to the development process throughout the continent. The Challenge Fund is open, on a competitive basis, to higher education institutions, research centres as well as bodies representing higher education institutions in all African countries.

Jamaica
University of the West Indies (UWI)
The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus received a donation of several books and a DVD on Japanese language and culture from Japan’s Embassy to Jamaica in order to support Japanese learning at the University’s modern language teaching programme, and as part of the efforts to further strengthen the relationship between the UWI and Japan. This initiative is the second of a series of contributions initiated 2002 that included the provision of full equipment of the University’s language laboratory and the provision of two Japanese instructors to facilitate the teaching of Japanese at the Mona Campus. In reciprocity, UWI’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures started developing a new course in Japanese in order to set up a minor in the language.

The Department of Chemistry of the University of Bergen has been awarded two Erasmus Mundus programmes which will both start in autumn 2008.
 These are:
- “European Joint Master in Quality in Analytical Laboratories (EMQAL)”, offering courses and Master’s theses in cooperation with the University of Algarve (coordinator), a university in Poland, two in Spain and one in Portugal;

The University of Akureyri launched a call for application for joint research position and tenure track faculty position at the Icelandic Tourism Research Centre (ITRC) and the University of Akureyri. The position is divided equally between both institutions, with teaching obligations towards the University and research obligations in the field of economics, tourism and leisure studies at the ITRC. The appointment will commence 1st August 2008 and will run for three years with the possibility of tenure. Deadline for applications is 15th April 2008.

Belgium
Université catholique de Louvain
The Université catholique de Louvain is going to start offering all its masters reformed according to the Bologna Process – i.e., 172 programmes plus 58 complementary programmes. The new content - supposed to reflect better the evolution of society - is characterised by increased global mobility, greater professional insertion/orientation, and interdisciplinarity. Students will be granted more responsibility in building their own track but they will also have to make a clearer choice as regarding the finality of their studies (research, teaching or professionalisation).

Ghent University
The Ghent University invites all European students to apply to the new joint International Master of Science in Rural Development it offers with the Agrocampus Rennes (France), Humboldt University of Berlin (Germany), the University of Cordoba (Spain), Wageningen University (Netherlands), the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (Slovakia) and the University of Pisa (Italy). Starting with the academic year 2008-09, this Erasmus Mundus programme is designed to offer students the opportunity to study the European vision on rural development in an international environment. A number of incentive measures are announced, such as additional Erasmus mobility grant, a reduction of the yearly subscription fee or courses exemptions for Master’s degree holders.
European students can submit their application until 15th August 2008.

The Aalborg University announced that enrolment for the 2008 session of its Master Problem Based Learning in Engineering and Science (MPBL) is open. The MPBL is a full distance and part time faculty development programme destined that aims at faculty how to change to new innovative teaching and learning methods. The University of Ghana launched a Distance Education Centre that will offer the Bachelor’s Degree programmes of its Business School and its Faculties of Arts and Social Studies. The University of Nairobi will be holding one of the three mini courses on “Linear Algebra: From Bases to the Google Algorithm” on June 20 - July 5. Organised by the Eastern Africa University Mathematics Programme (EAUMP) courtesy of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) and the International Science Programme (ISP) of Sweden in different countries of the region, the Schools aims at further training and updating knowledge, stimulating regional and international collaboration in research and training, and sharing research outcomes.

Internship Program for 2008 August 29, 2008 – November 25, 2008.
The Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea, is planning to host an International Internship Program on Science and Technology from 2008. The primary objective of the International Internship Program is to carry out research and provide training related to science and technology. CISS has worked to organize an International Internship Program once a year, offering students from various countries the opportunity to participate in a 3 months training course at GIST. This year, 20 intern students are sought for for the upcoming Fall semester (August 29, 2008 – November 25, 2008). The International Internship Program is designed to provide knowledge and skills related to science and technology in the areas of Life Science, Mechatronics, Information and Communications, Materials Science, Environmental Science, and Photonics.

The Universidad Iberoamericana Ciudad de México launched a diploma called "estudios olímpicos: china 2008" (Olympic Studies: China 2008), a multidisciplinary approach of the world sport event. This diploma - unique in Latin America - seeks to open an interdisciplinary space for reflection, investigation and criticism on history, as well as the different implications, links and economic, political, philosophical, cultural, mediatic and esthetic-artistic impact of the Olympic Movement (from the Pan Hellenic games held in the Ancient Greece until Athens 2004). The diploma will also provide a wide historico-cultural approach of China, the host country of the Olympic Games 2008 and a detailed panorama of each Olympic disciplines.

The Bergen University launched “the Bergen Summer Research School” (BSRS), an initiative meant to produce and disseminate research-based education to address some key global challenges posed by an increasingly knowledge-based, complex, multicultural, religiously diverse, and unequal global society. The Open University
The Open University launched a new course called “Ethics in Real Life”, that investigates contemporary ethical issues - such as euthanasia, plagiarism, professional ethics and business responsibility - ethical theory, and ethical decision-making. The first presentation begins in April 2008; student registrations are now closed, however the 15-week course will be presented twice a year.

University of Tasmania
The University of Tasmania signed a three-year partnership agreement with the Tasmanian Government which focuses on the priority areas of health, education, climate change, Antarctic and marine science and island culture. The initiatives announced include the setting up of an institute for marine and Antarctic studies, incorporating all existing University marine and Antarctic researchers into a single large institute, and a series of research scholarships for exploring the potential of Tasmania’s island culture.

Botswana
University of Botswana (UB)
The University of Botswana and Missouri University of Science and Technology, United States signed a Memorandum of Agreement on February 20 to set up a programme of academic and scientific cooperation in mining engineering in order to encourage teaching and research activities between both institutions. So far, initiatives foreseen include the setting up and administration of a three plus two year programme (3+2) leading to the award of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering by Missouri S&T, training of local faculty/academic staff to contribute to the setting up of a Department of Mining Engineering at UB, research collaboration between academic staff and students of both institutions, collaboration on the development of on-line courses.

European Universit Association (EUA)
EUA is part of a consortium - with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education (Nuffic) – that has been selected by the European Commission to establish an EU-Asia Higher Education Platform for European and Asian academics and policy makers. The aim of the two-year project is to provide a means for enhancing information exchange, dialogue, and cooperation in higher education and research between Europe and Asia, to develop best practices for institutional development and cooperation, foster mobility of students and academics between the two regions, and draw attention to the role and situation of universities in developing countries.
Initiatives planned include a series of workshops and round tables in Asia and Europe, the creation of an information and communication portal and two major-higher education fairs to be held in Asia. The first event is scheduled for autumn 2008.

Rikkyo University and the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) have concluded an academic exchange agreement to develop a series of cooperation programmes and foster intellectual exchanges between Japanese and Chinese researchers. Concrete applications already planned are the joint study of environmental and civic issues that could emerge after the Olympic Games in Beijing, 2008, as well as public lectures and symposiums.

University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
UKZN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malagasy University and the University of Antananaravio both located in Madagascar on February 19, 2008 to reinforce a previous agreement signed in 2006. The new agreement is meant to strengthen interinstitutional links and extend their collaboration to a series of research and other projects that are of fist importance for their development future.

University of Hawai
The University of Hawaii at Hilo and the Hawaii Community College (HawCC) signed a memorandum of understanding that will enable the schools to promote a new system of coordinating undergraduate classes for students attending both institutions. The agreement set up a “Degree Pathways Partnership Program”, which is expected to help increase student access, success and four-year degree completion through improved academic program articulation between the two institutions.

For the first time in the institution’s history, a PhD candidate will defend his thesis through video conferencing. Due to personal circumstances, the University’s Doctorate Board exceptionally decided to allow the defence ceremony and the presentation of the doctorate to take place at different locations. The PhD ceremony will progress as an ordinary doctoral degree presentation, although the exchange of views between the PhD candidate and the opponents will take place by means of a video connection. An attached from the Netherlands Embassy in Israel will verify the PhD candidate’s identity and will guarantee that he is the person actually speaking.

The University of the Witwatersrand set up a Centre for Indian Studies in Africa (CISA) in its Johannesburg campus to encourage research, teaching and public debate about India and its growing presence across the African continent. Projects currently in the planning will aim at investigating issues that are common to South Africa and India such as social divisions of caste, community and race or urbanisation or constitutional law. The Centre is also expected to support the expansion of applied research collaborations between Wits and Indian universities.

The London Metropolitan University and Croydon College announced an agreement meant to develop a new form of partnership to create a substantial new University Centre in Croydon. Initial plans are for a new Centre to cater for around 2,000 students in its early stages, growing to over 5,000 students in time. This initiative is also to be seen as a contribution to the larger plan destined to develop economic potential and skills provision locally through increased access to higher education.

Pace University received the Highest Federal Recognition for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Commitment from the Corporation for National and Community Service was named Pace University to the 2007 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to disadvantaged youth.
