Directions in Educational Planning
A Symposium to Honour the Work of Françoise Caillods
during Four Decades at IIEP
Thursday 3 – Friday 4 July 2008
Françoise Caillods has worked at IIEP since 1969. During that period, some parts of the field of educational planning have demonstrated strong continuities but others have evolved in fundamental ways. Françoise Caillods has been a major participant in much of this continuity and change, and has herself been a leader in significant components. She has done this not only as a staff member of IIEP but also as a prominent figure in the international community.
A major objective of this event is to appreciate and celebrate the contributions made by Françoise Caillods. In line with her own wishes, it will not be restricted to such a focus. It will be a time for reflection and stocktaking on continuities and changes, informing younger generations who were not part of the era and encouraging older generations to hand on their wisdom and insights. Themes selected for focus will include links between, and contrasts between, macro-planning and micro-planning; the links between education, poverty reduction and development; and issues in the domestic and international financing of education. The symposium will not only look backwards: it will also look ahead to anticipated future patterns and the implications that they hold for IIEP and the wider field.
The symposium will focus on a set of themes in which Françoise Caillods has herself played a major role. Designated individuals will examine these themes with a particular emphasis on the work that Françoise Caillods herself undertook. The discourse will inform participants in the symposium, and will encourage them to reflect on continuities and changes. It will also stimulate speculation on the future directions in these themes.
After the symposium, selected papers will be compiled, supplemented as necessary, and edited into a volume which both commemorates the work of Françoise Caillods and acts as a milestone in the literature on the field. The event will be bilingual in English and French.
