Created in 1995, this network has grown from 13 original members to 18 institutions from 10 countries. Its overall objective is to create synergy to enable participating institutions to address the needs for skill development in educational management in the region.
What has been done so far?
Activities since the launching include:
- a programme for the improvement of school management. This programme is action-oriented and focuses on the needs of head teachers and local-level managers. A seminar was organized in Shanghai in 2001 on 'Successful school management', and a study was published on 'The status of head teachers in the Asian region'.
- an ANTRIEP newsletter twice a year
- bilateral agreements within member institutions
- a research project on supervision and support services for basic education - in collaboration with the IIEP
- five policy seminars, covering key issues in Asia: quality monitoring, decentralization and school effectiveness.
Current and forthcoming activities
IIEP is continuing to assist ANTRIEP, although the network is gaining autonomy.. The project on 'Improving school management in Asia through capacity building of head teachers' is ongoing. It is expected that this programme will result in the design of a course and prototype material for training school managers. The following activities are under way:
- Case studies on successful schools, prepared by national teams in nine countries (to be finalized in 2004).
- Technical workshops.
- Publications (the book Headteachers: Core actors in educational improvement, is in press)
