Expanding training in modern computer-based research methodologies

Enhancing capacity to collect information that will generate valid data

Relevant data management procedures allow for valuable large-scale studies
Computer-based data management is applied routinely in the census bureaus of most developed countries. However, these techniques are not widely known or applied in ministries of education in developing countries.
Poor data management procedures result in data containing errors, and/or data not being systematically archived.

Delivering hands-on training in all aspects of computer-based data management
IIEP is working to distribute more flexible and intuitive versions of its own specialized survey sampling software. Efforts are also being made to broaden training opportunities for existing software.
Activities include:

  • preparation of a new user-friendly version of the IIEP's sample design and selection software (SAMDEM)
  • finalization of a user manual for the IIEP's specialized sampling error software (IIEPJACK)
  • training of planners in Africa and Asia on the use of WINDEM data entry and data cleaning software and the SPSS © generalized data management and data analysis software
The Viet Nam survey on the quality of education: one of the largest ever conducted
with data collected from around 70,000 students, 7,000 teachers, and 3,500 primary school principals
The IIEP is providing technical support to assist Viet Nam in the implementation of this survey.
During 2001-2004, the Institute has delivered interactive satellite training thanks to World Bank facilities, with IIEP staff in Paris and other trainers and participants located in six cities world wide. Courses and forums have targeted data management and quantitative research methods.
