Gudmund Hernes was Director of IIEP from December 1999 to December 2005. Gudmund Hernes has a Ph.D. in sociology from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. His first academic positions, at Bergen University (Norway), were as Professor and then Chairman of the Sociology Department, and as Director of the university's Center for Advanced Training in Social Research. He has also served as Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford, as Visiting Professor at Harvard University, and as Professor at Oslo University. He served as Under-Secretary of Planning in Norway from 1980 to 1981. From 1991 to 1995 he was Minister of Education, Research and Ecclesiastic Affairs and in this capacity launched far-reaching education reforms in primary, secondary and higher education. He was Minister of Health from 1995 to 1997.
He has written and edited many specialized books, reports and articles, is on the editorial board of several international specialist journals, and is member of several professional societies.
