Open content for higher education

The most recent of IIEP's forum series focused on Open Educational Resources – web-based materials offered freely and openly for use and re-use in teaching, learning and research.

IIEP's activities on OER are generously supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Forum One - an introduction to Open Educational Resources

An initial Internet forum took place in October/November 2005. Four hundred and eighty participants from 90 countries came together to hear from experts involved in a number of initiatives to either develop or use OER, and to explore related issues. The schedule and list of expert discussants are included in the project description. All of the background documents and reports can be accessed from the left-hand menu, as well as a list of useful resources generated during the forum.

Community discussions - a deeper exploration of some issues

Throughout 2006, the group continued to interact in a Community of Interest. Discussions have taken place on three topics:

March/April 2006: Developing a research agenda for OER
May/June 2006: A 'Do-It-Yourself' development portal for OER
October 2006: Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) solutions for OER

The final reports of the discussions are all available from this page. The FOSS for OER discussion formed the final session of a longer discussion in IIEP's Community of Interest on FOSS. The summary report of the discussion in the FOSS community was distributed to the joint OER and FOSS communities as a background document to the final session. It is available here. The final report of the joint discussion can be accessed from the left-hand menu.

Forum Two - findings from an OECD study on OER

In November 2006, members of the IIEP OER community were joined by OER experts and other interested individuals for a second formal discusssion forum. The forum was organised in association with the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation and focused on the findings and conclusions from an OECD study to map the scale and scope of OER initiatives in higher education. The background notes and discussion logs are all available from the left-hand menu. The final report can be accessed from the left-hand menu.

A new home for the OER Community

In November 2007 the Community transferred to the UNESCO's Education Sector.

More information about the ongoing work of the OER community can be found on the community wiki. To join the community, subscribe to the mailing list.
