The UNESCO Office in Kathmandu was established in 1998 upon conclusion of an agreement with the Government of Nepal. In Nepal, UNESCO’s programme priority areas are Education, Culture and Communication & Information.
Under Education, technical assistance is provided to support the Education for All (EFA) movement in Nepal, through mechanisms such as non-formal education through community based lifelong learning, with particular emphasis on gender equality and adult literacy. Cultural activities include preservation of cultural heritage – both tangible and intangible, promotion of cultural diversity and development of cultural/eco- tourism. Related to communication & information, UNESCO promotes freedom of expression, the right to information and press freedom.
In addition, UNESCO promotes and provides technical support for intellectual cooperation in poverty reduction, environmental protection, Information Communication Technology (ICT) for community development, human rights protection and sustainable development.
