Quality Economies: Labelling

Argan Oil

Several biosphere reserves are developing labelling, certification and associated marketing schemes as tools for promoting quality economies. By guiding consumers to recognise, and hopefully buy, quality goods and services originating from biosphere reserves respectful of the environment and that bring fair benefits to local communities, these schemes work as market incentives for producers to increase the supply of quality products from biosphere reserves qualified to carry the label.

At present there is no UNESCO-MAB labelling scheme in place but the MAB Task Force has prepared some informal recommendations concerning national biosphere reserve origin labelling schemes. (see publications section).
