Objectives
This decision was taken with the aim of promoting the interest of
young scientists to participate in the Great Apes Survival Project
(GRASP), launched in 2001 by the United Nations Environmental Programme
(UNEP) and the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and in
which many international NGOs, multilateral environmental agreements
and the private sector have become involved. This constitutes a
substantial contribution of UNESCO towards the effective implementation
of the “Kinshasa Declaration
for the Survival of Great Apes”, adopted by the international
community during the first Intergovernmental Conference on Great
Apes and GRASP, held in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo,
5-9 September 2005.
Criteria used in the selection of the Award:
The requests for research grants will be examined using the same
procedure as the MAB Young Scientist Research
Award Scheme, as applied by the MAB Bureau since 1989, of which
you are aware. The GRASP Scientific Commission will also be requested
to participate in the review of proposals received. The details
of this new grant are as follows:
- Title of the Scheme: Research Grants to Young Scientists on
Great Apes of Africa (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobos and/or Dwarf
Chimpanzees);
- Amount of individual Grant: Not to exceed $5 000 US;
- Timing of Grant: At the time of the nineteenth session of MAB
International Coordinating Council meeting (23-27 October
2006);
- Language of presentation of proposals: English or French;
- Submission of proposals: Each country can nominate a maximum
of three research study proposals on the conservation of great
apes, with preference given to those using populations in or around
biosphere reserves, which can be used as pilot sites and demonstration
areas.
- Research studies may focus on: inventory methods, ecotourism
development, participation of local populations in great ape habitat
management, alternative solutions to fight poaching and bushmeat
sales, techniques of raising public awareness, etc.
- Proposals submitted should be brief but comprehensive (not
more than 10 pages).
How to apply
Deadline for applications for the Awards is 30 June 2006.

More awards and projects for youth
- National MAB Awards and Certificates: several countries have
established national MAB-related award and certificate initiatives
for young people. One example is the MAB Certificate for Young
Researchers and Environmental Managers of Indonesia.
- Some countries also encourage MAB Young Scientists Networks.
The Canadian Biosphere Reserves Association's Student Network
(CBRASN) is a good example.
- UNESCO MAB also sponsors educational training packages for youth,
in line with the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
