Inspiring governments and major UK corporations to support great apes conservation
The dinner was hosted by Elliot Morley, Minister for the Environment and Agri-Environment of the United Kingdom, and Klaus Toepfer, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). A keynote address was given by eminent conservationist Dr Richard Leakey.

Largest donor to the Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP), the UK Government got involved in a campaign to "bring GRASP to business", in the first half of 2004. It culminated in the gala dinner, held at Prince Albert Suite, London Zoo, Regent's Park, London.

Raising funds for the Great Apes Survival Project
The Great Apes Survival Project is lead by UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It is the first ever concerted approach to a major extinction crisis.

It is a global partnership which brings together:

  • national governments
  • international organisations
  • multilateral environmental agreements
  • non-governmental organisations

Its goal is to conserve viable populations of all species and subspecies of great apes in their natural habitats.
