UNESCO raises funds for great apes exhibition worldwide travel, starting from Paris. A national exhibition on great apes was shown in the French museum of science and industry, in Paris (December 2004-March 2005). UNESCO, thanks to support from enthusiasts and internal funds, has bought the materials from the exhibition, in DVD format. The exhibition is now available for 23 countries where great apes live, or range states.

Stressing the importance of public and government support in great apes conservation
The French museum of science and industry (Cité des sciences et de l'industrie), located in La Villette, Paris, organized a great apes exhibition from 7 December 2004 to 6 March 2005. Its inauguration press conference called for greater involvement of the Government and the public in supporting great apes conservation.

Providing complete sets of exhibits, posters and written texts
UNESCO has purchased 27 DVD copies from the museum, at a cost of 7,000€. The DVDs contain exhibits, posters and written texts of the exhibition.

Gathering key actors: the Great Apes Survival Project
Funds were raised through:

  • the resources of UNESCO's World Heritage Fund
  • contributions from the general public to support great apes survival

Building partnerships to organize national exhibitions
The Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP) is lead by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UNESCO. It notably involves 23 range states, many donor nations and over 30 NGOs, uniting efforts for the conservation and survival of great apes.

The UNESCO Great Apes Survival Project Secretariat will donate a DVD to each of the 23 great apes range states. Means to organize exhibitions will be discussed with authorities in each country. The information from the DVD will be adapted where needed.

This project could give rise to new in-country partnerships between the public and the private sectors and the civil society, in view of:

  • organizing educational events highlighting the cause of great ape conservation
  • mobilizing support for protecting wild great ape populations and habitats
