Emergency meeting to save the great apes
Funds are urgently needed to lift the threat of imminent extinction
from humankind's closest living relatives, delegates to an international
crisis meeting on the great apes announced on 26 November 2004 at UNESCO
in Paris. UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
gathered key international actors to break ground for a global strategy
for great ape conservation.

Saving a unique bridge to the natural world
25 million US$, said UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP), is the bare minimum for reducing the risk of extinction
of the world's remaining gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans,
and for establishing areas where ape populations could stabilise
or even increase.

"Great apes form a unique bridge to the natural
world," said Koïchiro Matsuura, UNESCO Director-General. "The forests
they inhabit are a vital resource for humans... Saving the great
apes and the ecosystems they inhabit is not just a conservation
issue but a key action in the fight against poverty."
Drawing up a survival plan for the great apes
Under the auspices of UNEP and UNESCO, representatives from the
23 great ape home "range states" in Africa and South East Asia as
well as donor governments, UN agencies, NGOs and other Great Apes
Survival Project partners met for the first time in Paris from 26-28
November 2003.
The meeting allowed to draw up a Global Great Ape
Conservation Strategy. It also prepared for an inter-governmental
ministerial conference on great apes to be held in late 2004. A
press conference was also held on 28 November, to help raise public
awareness of the crisis.
