Five Transboundary Biosphere Reserves in Europe

Published by UNESCO-MAB, July 2003.
The Seville Strategy recommends that "the establishment of transboundary biosphere reserves be encouraged, as a means for dealing with the conservation of organisms, ecosystems and genetic resources that cross national boundaries". In 2000, the MAB ICC adopted a set of Recommendation for the establishment and functioning of transboundary biosphere reserves. This publication aims at giving an insight into the experience of the first five-transboundary biosphere reserves - all of which are located in Europe - to guide other countries. It is based on the findings of field studies by two MAB consultants in 2000-2001.
