| General Description |
Located in the extreme north-eastern part of China, this biosphere reserve covers 28,500 hectares in a typical hilly region known for its intact natural stands of Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis). This tree species is of world-wide interest for timber production and these forests constitute a valuable gene bank which should be protected, in spite of pressure to exploit the trees. The biodiversity is very rich, with more than 568 species of plants, 52 mammals, and more than 220 birds. About 3,000 people live in the biosphere reserve (1996). Collection of forest products, especially of Korean pine seeds, mushrooms and medicinal plants is carried out and could become a locally important economic activity. Tourism is being developed, with about 5,000 visitors per year (1996). There is a forty-year research record on climate, hydrology and the ecology of the Korean pine. Numerous institutions and universities participate in this work, including socio-economic studies on the impact of the conversion from forest exploitation to forest conservation. Educational activities are organized for schoolchildren and special efforts are made in raising environmental awareness among both inhabitants and visitors. |
