| General Description |
This biosphere reserve is situated in the western part of the Middle Bohemian range about 16 km west of Prague. It represents a wide variety of broad-leafed and mixed coniferous forest ecosystems, grasslands, pastures, valley meadows, and agricultural land. The core area is used as a hunting area, whereas in the buffer zone and transition area logging, timber processing, charcoal production, manufacturing, light industry and stone extraction as well as tourism take place. The 28,600 inhabitants of the biosphere reserve (1997) are mainly relying on these activities for income. Krivoklatsko Biosphere Reserve has a research, monitoring and education history dating back to 1979. There is cooperation between the biosphere reserve administration and the forest authorities on the sustainable use of forests. Changes made in forest management towards a species composition with prevailing broad-leafed trees is a good example of sustainable development. The biosphere reserve administration also cooperates closely with non-governmental organizations, local authorities and the Regional Civilian Association for Sustainable Tourism. The project ‘Biosphere reserve as a classroom’ targets school children, students and teachers for environmental education. |
