| General Description |
Situated in the province of West Java in the south of Jakarta, Cibodas Biosphere Reserve is an example of an ecosystem in the humid tropics undergoing strong human pressure. The Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park constitutes the core area of the biosphere reserve. It includes two twinned volcanoes and mountainous rain forests with many Javan endemic species. The buffer zone comprises for a large part production forest, tea plantations and horticulture fields. Rice irrigation fields and human settlements mostly cover the transition area. The impact of various human activities on the core area is growing due to tourism development and increasing population density in the surrounding areas. Shortage of fuelwood and income force local people to collect wood and non-timber forest products in the core area. The biosphere reserve fulfils its education function in providing a series of guidebooks and interpretation materials for visitors, including a guide to the well-used path in the forest with information on ‘things to look for’ at 27 marker stones. Cibodas is also taking part in a programme on the conservation of plants and environmental education for school children, for instance using its botanical garden for outdoor training. The biosphere reserve is also an important site for research, which for example has been carried out on biological resources, fuelwood demand and the use of GIS in resource management. |
