LA PRIMAVERA |
| General Description |
The diversity of ecosystems in La Primavera Biosphere Reserve are influenced by the geographical location of its forest area which covers the two floristic provinces: the one of the Sierra Madre Occidental and the one of the Sierras Meridionales or Volcanic Axis (the so called belt fire). These provinces are located in the Mesoamerican Mountain Region, formed by the confluence of two major realms: the Nearctic and the Neotropical. The area contains critical habitats for representative species of flora and fauna in the region, and serves as a genetic reservoir and biological corridor between the natural systems of the region (the canyon of the Santiago River, Cerro Los Bailadores, El Tepopote, Cerro de Tequila, Sierra de Navajas and Cerro Viejo). It is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and genetic heritage, and promoting the continuity of the evolutionary processes and it constitutes a living laboratory for scientific research and environmental education. This biosphere reserve comprises different types of land ownership, therefore it is necessary to create platforms for dialogue between different stakeholders and land owners so as to ensure development of activities and sustainable production models, with legal regulations that promote the implementation of projects that have low environmental impacts while generating incomes to their owners. The site provides logistical support for demonstration projects, and environmental education and training. There are 12 trails, 8 educational camps, and a 1560 ha area for public use and recreational activities. |

| Brief description |
The site runs programs for systematic monitoring and surveillance in the areas of greatest priority and fragility, with the deployment of rangers reporting on specific events. Other projects and programmes implemented in collaboration with universities include: • Early warning system and prediction of forest fires. • La Primavera Forest Integrated Research, Monitoring and Development Project (Institute of Meteorology and Astronomy at the University of Guadalajara). • Specific Research Demands Plan • Ecological Land Management Plan of Zapopan • Updating and Monitoring of Natural Resources |
