| General Description |
Vodlozersky Biosphere Reserve is located in the extreme north-west of the country. Mid-latitude and northern taiga landscapes are preserved here and all kinds of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems typical for this zone are represented - boreal coniferous forests (spruce Picea abies, P. obovata and pine Pinus sylvestris), mires, lake and river ecosystems. The most important task for the Vodlozersky Biosphere Reserve is the improvement of the social and economic conditions of life for the local population along with conservation and development of traditional, ecologically safe kinds of nature management and land uses (fisheries, haymaking, pasture and arable lands). Approximately 4,560 permanent residents (seasonally up to 5,600) live in the biosphere reserve (2001). The cultural heritage dates back to Mesolithic archaeological sites and to the 15th century when Russians started to colonize Vodlozerje which initiated the forming of an isolated cultural region in the Russian North. Apart from churches and chapels, also a very old cultural landscape and local customs have survived to date. Within the biosphere reserve, scientific and ecological expeditions are conducted to study and inventory the nature diversity and territory resources. Monitoring of boreal, mire and aquatic species is also carried out. There are programmes on the revival of traditional land-use practices and cultural traditions. At present, the territory is a model for working out a strategy for tourism development as a promising branch of economy in Inega and Pudozg regions. |
