| General Description |
The Ugra Biosphere Reserve and National Park is situated in the center of the East-European Plain, south-west of Moscow. The area plays a key role in the conservation of natural and cultural landscapes in the catchment areas of the Ugra, Zhizdra and Oka Rivers. The biosphere reserve also includes main Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of international significance and one of the few remaining old-growth broadleaf woodlands in European Russia. The area is also of cultural and historical significance since it hosts many archaeological sites, nobleman estates, monasteries, churches and ancient towns. About 2,500 permanent residents of the biosphere reserve mostly live in the transition area (2001) and mainly rely on agriculture. There is a high rate of unemployed persons and pensioners in the area. Seasonally, up to 12,500 people live here in dachas. The designation as biosphere reserve is hoped to enhance ecologically sound and traditional agriculture, to foster ecotourism and to create new jobs in small ‘green businesses’ such as bee-keeping or medical herb gathering. Within the biosphere reserve framework, local communities are familiarized with wise natural resource utilization and sustainable development techniques and carry out conservation projects. Currently, two projects funded by the Global Environmental Facility are implemented in the biosphere reserve (2002): a National Park Protection Service improvement project, and a model school project with the aim to provide ecological education to local communities. |
