      Biosphere Reserve Information

General Description   The Massif du Ziama Biosphere Reserve is located at the border to Liberia in the south-east of Guinea and about 100 km from the city N’Zérékoré. Situated within the Ziama Massif, the altitude of the biosphere reserve reaches up to almost 1,400 meters above sea level. The tormented relief includes valleys, plateaus, rounded ridges, rocky peaks, sheer cliffs and bar granite outcrops. The main habitats include primary mountain forests (with Lophira alata, Heritiera utilis, and Morus mesozygia), secondary mountain forests (with Pipadeniastrum africanum, Afzelia africana, and Canarium schweinfurthii), secondary forest in valleys, plains and swamps as well as savannas.
About 29,000 inhabitants live within the biosphere reserve (1980). There is a forestry concession of 30,000 hectares for a forestry station and a chipboard forestry. Furthermore, a quinine plantation with a processing station and a palm grove provide major sources of income for the inhabitants. Within the mountainous core area of about 60,000 hectares, timber extraction and hunting are forbidden. A Museum of Natural History and a herbarium are available for researchers and students.
