      Biosphere Reserve Information

General Description   Badiar Biosphere Reserve, established in 2002, is situated in the north of Guinea and is adjacent to the Niokolo-Koba Biosphere Reserve in Senegal. Located in the most hot, dry and arid part of Guinea, Badiar covers an area of 284,300 hectares savanna, open woodlands and gallery forests. Among the rich fauna are many threatened species such as hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), the Derby Eland (Taurotragus derbianus), elephants (Loxodonta africana), lions (Panthera leo) and chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).
About 82,400 people live in the biosphere reserve (2002). The area is characterized by a rich ethnic diversity connected with a very divers culture. People are mostly rural, relying on agriculture, stock raising, hunting, bee keeping and fishing. The use of bamboo, raffia and palm tree is also common. The local population participates in the management of the biosphere reserve. For demonstration and education purposes, a programme has been put in place which aims at supporting small development projects (such as market gardening, rising guinea-fowls, apiculture) in the transition area.
Biosphere reserve authorities from Guinea and Senegal are encouraged to cooperate in order to explore possibilities to create a transboundary biosphere reserve.
