Spain

VALLE DE LACIANA

General Description   This site is situated in the Province of Castilla y León and is characterized by the cooperative venture of four valley communities to promote tourism and new economic activities respectful of nature. Mining and hydraulic energy production are the main sources of revenue for the 14,956 inhabitants living in the transition area. This biosphere reserve has great importance for the protection of brown bear (Ursus arctos pyrenaicus). It is constituted by high-mountain grasslands used for cattle and sheep raising, and oak and beech forests. It is the only biosphere reserve in Spain that has a traditional model of grassland management, using local breeds of sheep and cattle. Research activities are being mainly implemented by the Universities of Castilla and León and focus on conservation issues of birds (Tetrao urogallus) and mammals (Canis lupus signatus), on socio-economic issues and research to improve the gene pool of the local breed of cattle. The whole area reglemented by “Plan General de Ordenacíon Urbana” on town and county planning at the provincial level. This site is managed by an Advisory Board as a consulting unit and Management Board. All stakeholders are represented in these boards including the local mayors and the Autonomous Province of Castilla and León.
