MADERAS DEL CARMEN

 
       
  General Description   The Protected Area includes a portion of the Sierra Madre Oriental in its north extreme, whose height, configuration and geographical interconnections allow the presence of a great variety of plants and animals, representative of the Chihuahuense Desert and Sierra Madre Oriental itself, especially communities typical of mesophyllic forests in the area, survivors of the geological times in which this part of the country was cooler and more humid, approximately 10,000 years ago. In the core zone there is no population; In the buffer zone, the estimated population is 60 people. For the transition zone, the population on a permanent basis is 600 and, depending on the season, 300.
The zonation proposal consists of two core zones. One of them (Cañón del Diablo), located in the Northern extreme of Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area, inside a private property and an ejido. The second core zone (Maderas del Carmen), is located in the central part of Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area, inside 3 private properties and an ejido.
The buffer zone is located around the core zones, but inside the boundaries of Maderas del Carmen Flora and Fauna Protection Area , inside this area there are 6 private properties and 7 ejidos. Lastly, the transition zone is located surrounding the buffer zone and also the boundaries of the ANP. It is set in lots of 10 ejidos and 4 private properties.

  Major habitats & land cover types   In the area are predominant the desert shrubland, chaparral and grassland, and in a lower proportion, the forest of pseudotsuga.
