The Veracruzano Coral Reef System National Park (NPVRS) is located in the State of Veracruz, opposite the municipalities of Veracruz, Boca del Río and Alvarado, at an altitude of 0 metres above the sea level, at the geographic coordinates of 19º 02' 16" and 19º 15' 32" of North latitude (N) and 95º 46' 55" and 96º11'45" of West longitude (W); with a total surface of approximately 52,238 hectares and around 2.7 km at its wider side measured from the coast to open sea, in the continental shelf (Fig. 1). NPVRS borders to the Northwest (NW) with “Lobos-Tuxpan Coral Reef System” located in front of the Lagoon of Tamiahua and Tuxpan, Ver. and to the East (E) with the “Campeche and Yucatán Coral Reef System” (Gutiérrez et al., 1993).
It is composed by 23 coral reefs which are classified according to their location, into two groups:
GROUP I (SOUTH AREA): Anegada de Afuera; Santiaguillo ; Anegadilla ; Topatillo ; Cabezo, Baliza Norte ; Cabezo, Baliza Sur ; En medio ; Rizo ; Chopas ; Polo ; Blanca ; Giote ; Punta Coyol. GROUP II (NORTH AREA): Ingeniero; Sacrificios; Pájaros; Verde y Paducah; Anegada de Adentro; Blanquilla, Baliza Norte; Blanquilla, Baliza Sur; Galleguilla; Gallega; Punta Gorda; Hornos.
In this area, artisan fisheries is one economic activity on which several sectors of the population depend, ecotourism activities offered by population of the coast adjacent to the Veracruzano Coral Reef System, all this under one management programme created with the participation of several social groups: fisheries cooperatives, tourism sector, educational and research institutions. |
