An international symposium

Management of Social Transformation in Indonesia
In Search of Models for Conflict Prevention

25-27 September 2000
hosted by the Centre for Social and Cultural Studies, Indonesian Institute of Sciences,
related to the MOST APMRN Project

This symposium was hosted by the Centre for Social and Cultural Studies, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (PMB-LIPI) on 25-27 September 2000.

The objectives of the symposium were: 

  • to find a more scientific method of identifying the sources of conflicts by demonstrating the strength of social, cultural, economic and political dimensions involved;
  • to contribute an alternative concept for resolving conflicts that are taking place in various parts of the country, especially in cities and urban centres;
  • to lay a foundation for creating an early detection and early warning system to prevent and anticipate conflicts that may break out in the future.
The 2 main themes of the symposium were: 
    Theme 1 - Methods of identifying sources of conflicts in multicultural and multi-ethnic societies

    Theme 2 - Case studies and experiences in conflict prevention, management and resolution in Southeast Asian countries.
