As the project on “Children’s Perception of the Environment” was originally
conceived by Lynch, it was intended to move from research on children’s use and
evaluation of their environments to children’s participation in planning,
designing and implementing improvements in their communities. Lynch was
particularly interested in Third World areas undergoing rapid change, and for a
while a site in Tunis was under discussion. New staff in the UNESCO office in
Paris, however, had other interests, and Lynch himself turned his attention to
other endeavors, so that there was no further development of the project.
