1997
In the eight Growing Up in Cities countries, project teams carried out
intensive fieldwork from late 1996 through 1997. In June 1997, project leaders
assembled for a second workshop in Trondheim, Norway to share preliminary
results and to plan future work and publications. The workshop was followed by
the Urban Childhood Conference in celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the
founding of Trondheim. Growing Up in Cities was featured in a number of
conference presentations and displays, and convened a conference workshop on
“Participatory Practices for Involving Children in Urban Planning.”
In November 1997, the first of a two-part workshop series to spread project
ideas and methods was held in Amsterdam under the joint sponsorship of the MOST
Programme of UNESCO and the Averroes European Training Centre of the
Netherlands. Representatives of the following cities attended: Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia; Kigali, Rwanda; Yaounde, Cameroon; Mutare, Zimbabwe; Mumbai, India;
Dhaka, Bangladesh; Tehran, Iran; Brasilia, Brazil; Rotterdam, The Netherlands;
Goteberg, Sweden; and Bucharest, Romania. As they were encouraged to do, most
cities sent a team of representatives.
