Drawing by a girl from Ferreirasdorp, of the apartment block she calls
"home", and the main features of her immediate neighbourhood.
The children of Ferreirasdorp, living in highrise complexes on the fringes of
the inner city, engaged in structured interviews, drawings, group
discussions, and child-led tours of their area. They elected four
representatives who presented their work to a gathering of Mini and Junior
Councillors from around the country. Following the presentation, the
Johannesburg Junior Council raised money to help the children of
Ferreirasdorp realize some of their visions for a better community. The
children then met and prepared a request for assistance which was forwarded
to the local council, since planning permission is required for certain
improvements in the area.
