Botswana

Constitution as adopted on 30 September 1966.

Article 5

    2. Any person who is arrested or detained shall be informed as soon as reasonably practicable, in a language that he understands, of the reasons for his arrest or detention.
Article 10
    2. Every person who is charged with a criminal offence... (b) shall be informed as soon as reasonably practicable, in a language that he understands and in detail, of the nature of the offence charged;...

    (f) shall be permitted to have without payment the assistance of an interpreter if he cannot understand the language used at the trial of the charge;

Article 62

    Subject to the provisions of section 63 of this Constitution, a person shall be qualified to be elected as a member of the National Assembly if, and shall not be qualified to be so elected unless... (d) he is able to speak, and unless incapacitated by blindness or other physical cause, to read English well enough to take an active part in the proceedings of the Assembly.

Article 80

    4. Subject to the provisions of subsections 5 and 6 of this section a person shall be qualified to be elected as a Specially Elected Member of the House of Chiefs if, and shall not be qualified to be so elected unless... (c) he is able to speak and, unless incapacitated by blindness or other physical cause, to read English well enough to take an active part in the proceedings of the House;
