Asia-Pacific Social Sciences School NETwork - APSSSNET

UNESCO's Regional Unit for Social and Human Sciences in Asia and the Pacific (RUSHSAP) is collaborating with the Suankularbwittarylai Nonthaburi School (SNS) in Bangkok to establish a website addressing students and teachers involved in UNESCO's Associate Schools Project (ASP schools). This project, undertaken in the framework of the MOST Clearing House Programme, will allow the users to share information on topics such as migration, youth, human rights, governance, democracy and leadership. The first stage of the project is funded by UNESCO. Within the coming biennium, the project's activities will be extended to more schools in Member States within the region.

This is an ambitious project which will probably have to face several problems in its initial stage. In the long run, however, electronic communication seems to offer the best and cheapest facilities allowing teachers and students, particularly those in the remotest areas, to access up-to-date information on social sciences and other fields of knowledge. Geographical distance is one of the main causes of informational isolation, and this project hopes to address this where it is mostly needed, in education. Up-to-date equipment and a creative presentation of information would make teaching and learning more relevant and enjoyable for the large majority of the region's children, left out because of geographic and socio-economic reasons.

The project will contribute to other major programmes of UNESCO focusing on education, governance, migration, democracy and human rights. Furthermore, the project will be presented to potential donors who could donate the necessary equipment, especially for schools which are too poor to afford it. The donors will also be asked to contribute to the training components of the project.
