Legislation
The National Commission was created according to the Royal Decree no. 5/74 (1974). The Royal Decreee no. 95/88 of 1988 organizes the National Commission.
Documentation Centre
The Commission runs a modest Documentation Centre, which holds publications of UNESCO and other Organizations such as ISESCO and ALECSO.
Structure of the Commission
The National Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly;
- Four Sub-Committees dealing with Education, Science, Culture and woman affairs
- The Secretariat.
Members/Composition
As a governmental body, the National Commission is composed of some 20 members representing different Ministries, national organizations and academic institutions specialized in the fields of UNESCO's competence. The Commission meets in Plenary twice a year.

General Assembly
Membership of the General Assembly is from ministries and Governmental Organisations which have relations with the aims of UNESCO: Minister of Education (Chairperson); Undersecretary for Ministry of Education (Deputy Chair); representatives of the following Ministries: Foreign Affairs, Social Affairs, Labour & Vocational Training; Agriculture & Fisheries; Regional Municipalities & Environment; Water Resources; Information; National Heritage & Culture; National Economy; representatives from the following National Organisations: Sultan Qaboos University; General Organisation for Youth Sports and Cultural Activities. In addition, three nationals who have interest in the field of Education, Culture and Science, appointed by the Chairperson. Their membership lasts for 3 years, liable for renewal.
The Assembly meets twice a year. Exceptional meetings may be held, according to the request of the Chairperson or the Secretary-General.
Committees or Sub-Committees
According to the Royal Decree N° 95/88, the Chairperson is authorized to form 3 sub-committees from members of the Assembly. These are: Educational, Culturel and Science Committees. Each sub-committee decides its meetings according to the burden of its work.

Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
Overview
The Oman National Commission collaborates with most National Commissions of Arab States as well as National Commissions of other countries such as Korea, Japan, China, India, Russian Federation, Germany and Netherlands in the fields of UNESCO's competence. It also has a very good working relations with UNESCO Offices in Arab States, particularly with the UNESCO Office in Doha.
