LégislationThe Institute was established by the Decree Law n° 9.355.
The regulations governing the organization of the Commission have been revoked. New regulations are being drafted.
Centre de documentationThe Documentation Centre holds about 2000 books and periodicals, which mainly are UNESCO publications. Even though the information contained in UNESCO CDRoms are available for internal use, the Centre itself is not computerized. The Documentation Centre above all welcomes visitors who are interested in obtaining fellowships or financial assistance for projects.
Structure de la CommissionThe Institute is composed at the moment of the Secretariat and two Specialized Commissions:
- The Secretariat
- The National Folklore Commission
- The UNESCO Coupons Commission.

The legal text by which the Commission was established provides for a Board of Directors and a Deliberative Council. However, the posts are not filled because of the current reorganization of the Commission (particularly financial) and the transfer of Governmental Offices to Brasilia. The Commission has no Executive Committee.
Membres/CompositionThe Institute comprises representatives of Ministries and renowed personalities. It is being reorganized.
Comité exécutifThe Commission has no Executive Committee.
Assemblée généraleThe legal text by which the Commission was established provides for a Board of Directors and a Deliberative Council. However, the posts are not filled because it is believed that the Commission must be reorganized in light of new governmental regulations (particularly financial) and the transfer of Governmental Offices to Brasilia.
Comités ou sous-comitésThe Commission has 2 Committees:
- National Folklore which meets weekly. It is composed of known folklorists appointed by the Commission. The National Folklore Committee has 18 State Folklore Committees in various States of Brazil, each of them having their own staff.
- UNESCO Coupons Commission which supervises the Coupons Programme. It is composed of representatives of Ministries and of the National Commission.
Coopération avec l’UNESCO et d'autres Commissions nationales
Vue d'ensembleThe Institute maintains regular working relations with the Portuguese-speaking National Commissions (Angola, Cap-Vert, Guinée-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, etc).
