Date and Method of CreationSeptember 1983 by a Presidential Directive

LegislationThe National Commission was officially established in 1983 by the Presidential Directive CAB 21/83 as approved by the Cabinet. The judicial text was accepted on 01/01/1983. The Commission does not have any fundamental text such as a Constitution.
Documentation CentreThough the National Commission does not have any official Documentation Centre nor any special officer in charge of the publications, it has set up a small library in its premises. Moreover, the library welcomes visitors to borrow its publications.
Structure of the CommissionThe National Commission is composed by:
- The General Assembly, which meets three times a year;
- The Main Committees: Education, Sciences, Culture;
- A number of Working Sub-Committees, which are responsible for UNESCO Core Business, like EFA Working Group, ASPNet Working Group, Literacy, Application of Remote Sensing, Management of Semi Arid Zones.

There are UNESCO Desk Officers in the key ministries for UNESCO Core Business.

Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
OverviewThe National Commission cooperates with other National Commissions in the Cluster and SADC region. At country level, the National Commission interacts with other UN agencies. The private sector and the wider NGO community are represented in the activities of the National Commission.
