The National Commission, which was officially established in 1952 and restructured in 1974, is entrusted to the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture.

Structure of the Commission
The National Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly, which meets twice a year;
- The Executive Committee, which supervises the ongoing activities of the Commission;
- The Nomination Committee, which selects candidates for membership of the Commission;
- Six Specialized Committees dealing with: (1) Education; (2) Natural Sciences; (3) Human and Social Sciences; (4) Culture; (5) Communication; and (6) Public Information.
- The Secretariat.
Members/Composition
The Commission is composed of some 60 members representing governmental departments, the House of Representatives, the House of Councilors, professional associations, institutions and individuals specialized in in the fields of UNESCO's competence.
The members are appointed by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology for a three-year term.
Interaction with UNESCO and National Commissions
Overview
The Japanese National Commission for UNESCO (JNCU) closely collaborates with its counterparts from the Asia and the Pacific countries. To strenghten the partnership and promote mutual understanding, JNCU has organized the fellowship programmes for staff of National Commissions for UNESCO in Asia and the Pacific region once a year. In this region, it has also been held regularly the Sub-Regional Meeting of Secretary-Generals of National Commissions for UNESCO in East Asia and the Regional Conference of National Commissions for UNESCO in Asia and the Pacific.
JNCU maintains close connection with the UNESCO Field Offices in Bangkok (Thailand), Jakarta (Indonesia) and Beijing (China), especially through implanting the programmes by Japanese Fund-in-Trust.
