| Legislation | The SAEIMA (Parliament of the Republic of Latvia) approved the Constitution of the National Commission in May 1992. This Constitution came into force in 1994.

| Documentation Centre | The Commission has a collection of publications issued by UNESCO and other National Commissions, as well as reports produced by International Organizations and Government Departments. The Commission receives some 300 visitors annually to consult these publications. |
| Structure of the Commission | The National Commission consists of the following bodies:
- The General Assembly, which meets in Plenary at least twice a year;
- The Executive Committee, which meets when required;
- Three Programme Committees dealing with: (1) Education; (2) Science; and (3) Culture, working group for "Memory of the World" programme, UNESCO ASPnet Board;
- The Secretariat. |
| Members/Composition | The National Commission is composed of 16 members representing various ministries and government departments, national institutions and associations involved in UNESCO's fields of competence, as well as the University of Latvia and the National Library. |

| Committees or Sub-Committees | Each of the Latvian National Commission's members is responsible for one of UNESCO's fields of activities. He/she can create advisory groups instead of sub-committees, according to need. The creation of sub-committees is however foreseen in the Constitution of the National Commission. |
