The 19th African Union Summit
The 19th session of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) was held in Addis Ababa 9-16 July with the theme: “Boosting Intra-African Trade”.
The choice of the theme was both appropriate and timely, given the challenges facing trade, and the need to come up with strategies to improve the situation.
The Assembly of Heads of State and Government has, among other tasks, elected the new Commission of the African Union which is now composed as follows:
- Chairperson: Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Minister of Home Affairs of South Africa. She replaces the outgoing Chairperson Dr. Jean Ping, was holding the position since 2008.
- Deputy-Chairperson: Mr. Erastus Mwencha. He was re-elected to the post which
he first assumed in 2008. For a full new Commission’s members list please consult http://au.int/en/content/african-union-has-new-commission.
The next 20th AU Summit is to be held in January 2013.
