Unesco and Forest Whitaker mobilize South Sudan and Ugandan youth around the SDGs

The Africa Department participated in an extensive mission conducted in northern Uganda by the Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), an organization founded and headed by Forest Whitaker, UNESCO Special Envoy Peace and Reconciliation and UN Advocate for the SDGs.

During a training workshop for young leaders from South Sudan and Uganda, Jacques Plouin, from the Africa Department, ran a session on the Sustainable Development Goals. Using participative and simulation-based approaches, the training was designed to help the young leaders integrate the SDG framework into their community project, thus increasing their capacity to reach out to potential partners. Following the training, four young women and men later presented their “Dream for 2030” during the official session of the workshop, which included, in particular, Mr Forest Whitaker, Ms Rosa Malongo, Resident Coordinator of the UN for Uganda, Ms Nada Al-Nashif, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Social and Human Sciences, and representatives from the UNESCO Office in Uganda.
