Equality between men and women in the music sector
United by a common objective to consolidate professional networks and cultural expertise in Senegal, the UNESCO office in Dakar has joined forces with Tringa Musique et Développement to examine the question of gender in the dynamic cultural sector by strengthening cultural industries in a conference to be held at the Maison Douta Seck in Dakar on 21 December 2016.
Part of the actions taken by the International Federation of Musicians (FIM), the Swedish syndicate (Union to Union), and the Association des Métiers de la Musique of Senegal (AMS) include the adoption of the Declaration of Dakar on gender equality in the music industry in January 2016. The objection of this reflection is to act on women’s rights in the music sector in Senegal, especially within the framework of public policies which support women as creators, producers, and consumers of various cultural products.
This meeting will also serve as an occasion to reflect on this issue in relation to the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, which presents culture and creativity as factors of sustainable development, economic and social progress in promotion of human rights, and the fundamental freedoms of expression, information, and communication.
