Celebration of Global Action Week in Senegal

The week of 27 April to 3 May is chosen by Senegal to carry out education awareness-raising and advocacy activities as part of the Global Action Week for Education for All, celebrated elsewhere from the 21st to the 27th of April.

Under the slogan ‘Every child needs a teacher: qualified teachers for all!’ activities will be carried out on the national and local level.

The official launch of the week is planned for Saturday the 27 April at the ‘Centre de Sauvegarde de Cambérène’. The launch will provide the occasion for a national social mobilization in this suburb of Dakar in the presence of leaders and decision makers.

At the national level an assessment on the current situation of teachers will be carried out. A round table led by specialists and education activists on effective teacher improvement strategies is planned for the 4 May at UNESCO’s Regional Office in Dakar.

At the local level, analysis and debates on specific themes relating to teachers will be organized in partnership with community based organisations. Marches are planned in the 14 regions of Senegal throughout the week, in collaboration with local decision makers (politicians, administrators, academics, traditional and social leaders).

Press releases relating to commitments and perspectives will be issued in each region.

Rising to the teacher challenge

The activities in Senegal are coordinated by the Coalition of Organisations in Synergy for the Defence of Public Education (COSYDEP in French), a member of the African Education for All Campaign Network (ANCEFA in French) and a focal point of the Global Campaign for Education.

COSYDEP is dedicated to achieving significant impact on the design, implementation and evaluation of education policies and training. As a 125 member strong organisation, it is made up of 5 stakeholder groups (grass roots organizations, non-governmental organizations, associations of students’ parents, teacher organisations and the media) and is present in 14 regions of the country.

UNESCO statistics indicate that many children around the world continue to be taught by non-qualified teachers. Close to 2 million new teachers are needed to achieve the goal of universal primary education by 2015.
