Irina Bokova opens the 6th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, opened today the sixth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. The session is held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 10 to 14 December.

“This year, the International Fund for Cultural Diversity provided financial support to 48 projects to strengthen cultural policies and cultural industries in 36 developing countries, primarily in Africa,” said the Director-General. “We are making headway in securing recognition of the power of culture – but I believe its full power is still largely untapped. We can do more to harness culture’s power to help societies grow beyond crisis, to strengthen social cohesion, to share understanding and lay the foundations for lasting peace”.

The Intergovernmental Committee is composed of 24 State Party members, elected for 4 years by the Conference of Parties, to promote the objectives and implementation of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. It meets annually at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.

The activities of this session include, among others, the examination of quadrennial periodic reports of Parties to the Convention and approval of projects for funding under the International Fund for Cultural Diversity.
