The art competition “Living together with the Ocean”, provided children and youth of all ages the opportunity to express themselves artistically as well as scientifically. The winners of the art completion, organized by the IOC Sub Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States (IOCAFRICA) to mark World Oceans Day and the 1st African Day of Seas and Oceans, were announced at a function held at the Conference room of the UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa on 25 July 2014.

The best artwork in the category above 15 years were from Angela Hoareau (School of visual arts, Seychelles), Lisette Roseline (Tourism Academy, Seychelles), and Keshni Soorkia (Windsor Girl College, Mauritius). They will be invited to the third session of the IOC-Sub Commission for Africa and the Adjacent Island States which will be held from 8-10 October 2014 at the United Nations Office in Nairobi Kenya. They will be able to meet oceanographers and researchers from all over Africa and have the chance to listen to the ongoing discussions on oceans related subjects.

The largest number of art pieces was received from Namibia with more than 150 spectacular paintings and we even received paintings from as young as 6 year old artists from Tunisia. IOCAFRICA will publish a book with the best art work received, which will be distributed to all the participating schools and colleges. In total, 31 entries were selected to win a prize.

IOCAFRICA appreciates the efforts of the many talented children and youth who participated in the art competition.
